New Video – “HeartBreak” Sophie Ellis Bextor

Sophie Ellis Bextor is at it again with a new single, a collaboration with the Freemasons titled "Heartbreak Make Me A Dancer" the song has been reviewed on this site already, and to read the review click here. However this time around we will take a look at the new music video for the upcoming single.

The video showcases a new retro style, with crazy oompa loompa dancers. It's actually really good, what a surprise! The video is simple, but sexy and fairly sophisticated, as is most of Sophies work, being a model herself. However we see some fantastic camera work, and the way the song is strung together with the melodramatic bridges in the video is flawless.

But what it all comes down to is that it's quite a minimalistic video, nothing more nothing less, but it does the trick and this song will become quite the hit in the UK.  The use of colours and animation alongside the dancers and Sophie works very well and this video matches the modern style of the single itself.

The use of silhouettes is fantastic and works very well with the way sophie is presented almost as a bond girl. But overall the video is nothing spectacular, a solid effort though on Sophie's part. I give the video a rating of three stars, mainly due to the effective use of colour and animation and the good relationship between song and video, which is always something to look for in a video.

Spotlight – Kylie Minogue “Carried Away”

In My Arms Single Cover

In My Arms Single Cover

For This Weeks "Spotlight" I will be writing about a b-side that was featured on Kylie Minogue's hit single "Wow" from her mess of an album "X". Wow was a fantastic song, that bowed to her past hits such as "Love At First Sight" but also looked to the future with a catchy hook "You've got it, Your Wow Wow Wow Wow" and some nice lyrics to boot.

However what was almost more of an incentive to buy the single than the actual song, was the two b-sides, which were perfectly suited to be on the single for Wow as they are similar in many ways, however they should have been singles themselves and featured on the album "X" as they would have been much more succesful than the songs on the album.

Carried Away holds a dreamy chorus, as Kylie sings "I'm carried away in your arms right now" , and a fast dancable pace. The song would have been almost the best lead single choice for the album "X", as it relates to her struggles with cancer, as she alludes in the lyrics "I feel it turning around", it encapsulates the excitement of recovering from Breast Cancer and making her debut back on the music scene.

This song is a Kylie Masterpiece and deserves a lot more attention than it got, it was not her fault that the album ended up so badly, the reason why X was a bad album was because there was too much hype and a horde of collaborations that in the end she almost had a collage of crap on a cd, with some fantastic songs hidden amongst the mess.

Carried Away could've been an incredible hit, more so than "2 Hearts" it's what people want from Kylie, it's undeniably her style. This song recieves a rating of four stars, it is a pop music masterpiece.

New Single – Sophie Ellis Bextor “HeartBreak” Freemasons Edit

Sophie Is Back To Music!

Sophie Is Back To Music!

Sophie is back! As promised she would release some other material before she embarked on her fourth studio album, a follow up to 2007's "Trip The Light Fantastic" , and here it is!

This time round, Sophie is working with the Freemasons, who have provided some fantastic collaborations with artists, notably Kelly Rowlands "Work", with their "Freemasons Edit" making it into a hit in Australia and Europe.

Heartbreak, is one of two songs that Sophie released over her Myspace in June 2008, so this song is by no means "New". However it has been reworked, and rather brilliantly, the song before the editing was bland, plain and simple as I wrote in a previous article about Sophie. Her music in the past has been fantastic, but she really needs diverse beats and some melodrama in her music to bring out the best of her voice, otherwise she can sound banal.

The reworking adds a new middle section and a more complex beat, and in the meantime Sophie has recorded a music video for the song, which will be reviewed seperately.

Below is a short sample of the reworked track, if you enjoy it make sure you pre-order the single! It will be released in the UK Mid June, and in Australia a month later. This song recieves a rating of 3 stars, whilst it by no means matches up to her previous work, it is more than likely to achieve a very enviable charting position.
